Popular Preternaturaliana: Studying the Monstrous in Popular Culture

Popular Preternaturaliana was brought to life in May 2013 and serves as the official site of the Monsters & the Monstrous Area of NEPCA. We are sponsored by the Northeast Alliance for Scholarship on the Fantastic and hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching of the Medieval in Popular Culture. We hope to provide a resource for further study and debate of the preternatural wherever, whenever, and however it may appear.

The Fantastic Areas of NEPCA

The Fantasy & Science Fiction Area and Monsters & the Monstrous Area of the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association were launched in 2018 following over ten years of success of the Fantastic (Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction) Area, which was created in 2008. We serve as the successors to that area as well as the organization's various fantastic-themed areas (including Horror, Medievalism, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy).

Fantasy & Science Fiction Area Chair (2023-):

Monsters & the Monstrous Area Chair (2018-):

Michael A. Torregrossa, MA, The Alliance for the Promotion of Research on the Matter of Britain (founder), The Association for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching of the Medieval in Popular Culture (founder), and The Northeast Alliance for Scholarship on the Fantastic (founder), and Fantastic (Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction) Area Chair (2008-2018).

Area Chair Emeritus:

Faye J. Ringel, PhD, United States Coast Guard Academy

The Monsters & the Monstrous Area maintains two related blogs: Popular Preternaturaliana: Studying the Monstrous in Popular Culture and our outreach site Frankenstein and the Fantastic.

Please send Monsters-&-the-Monstrous-Area-related correspondence to the Area Chair at Popular.Preternaturaliana@gmail.com.

Popular Preternaturaliana is hosted by The Association for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching of the Medieval in Popular Culture.

NEPCA Fantastic News

The 2017 meeting of NEPCA will convene at University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts, from 27-28 October 2017, and, in conjunction with NEPCA, the Fantastic (Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction) Area is pleased to announce that the call for papers for our tenth-anniversary sessions is now available. Given the proximity to Halloween, we are especially interested in proposals that explore the motif of the monstrous but will also consider proposals outside that topic that relate to the fantastic. Scholars of all levels are invited to submit individual proposals or proposals for complete sessions; submissions will be accepted until 1 June 2017. Further details are available in the posted call for papers.

A complete archive lists of past sessions can be accessed at http://nepcafantastic.blogspot.com/p/the-history-of-science-fiction-fantasy.html.

Be on the lookout in fall 2017 for our call for papers for the 2018 convocation of NEPCA and our eleventh-anniversary and farewell sessions.

About the Area

The Monsters & the Monstrous Area of the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association welcomes proposals that investigate any of the things, whether mundane or marvelous, that scare us. Through our sessions, we hope to pioneer fresh explorations into the darker sides of the intermedia traditions of the fantastic (including, but not restricted to, aspects of fairy tale, fantasy, gothic, horror, legend, mythology, and science fiction) by illuminating how creative artists have both formed and transformed our notions of monsters within these sub-traditions in texts from various countries, time periods, and media and for audiences at all levels. Our primary goal is to foster a better understating of monsters in general and to examine their impact on those that receive their stories as well as on the world at large. However, as a component of the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association, the Monsters and the Monstrous Area is also especially interested in celebrating both the New England Gothic tradition and the life, works, and legacy of H. P. Lovecraft, a leading proponent of Weird Fiction and an immense influence on contemporary popular culture.
