Call for Papers: Special Issue on Jordan Peele

 

Guest editor Dr. Chesya Burke (Stetson University) seeks contributors for a special issue on the works of Jordan Peele for Supernatural Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Art, Media, and Culture to be published in the spring of 2022.

 

Submissions may consider Peele’s work as a writer, director, and/or producer as it falls within the scope of the journal’s purview; representations of the supernatural, the speculative, the uncanny, and the weird. Writers may focus on any of Peele’s works, with preference given to Get Out, Us, Candyman, Lovecraft Country, or any speculative or genre works that come out between now and the publication of this issue. Papers may center any topics, but special attention will be paid to Black masculinity, Black femininity, the way that comedy informs horror (and vice versa) within his work, Black bodies in abject horror, historical context and legacy, obscure nuances, and hidden easter eggs. Likewise, articles can put Peele’s work in conversation with other genre works, film makers, literature, and histories of Black horror.

 

Please send an abstract of no more than 500 words to cburke2@stetson.edu and supernaturalstudies@gmail.com by 30 April 2021. The Subject line should read: “Jordan Peele Issue: [abbreviated title].” Completed manuscripts will be due  by 15 September 2021, with revisions to be completed no later than 31 January 2022.

 

Proposals for [500-1000 word] reviews of scholarly work ormedia pertaining to Peele or to speculative fiction (literature) and black horror more broadly are also welcomed. Prospective reviewers should email a brief description (no more than 75 words) of their proposed topic and qualifications to cburke2@stetson.edu and supernaturalstudiesreviews@gmail.com. The Subject line should read: “Jordan Peele Review: [abbreviated title].” Reviews will be due by 31 October 2021.

Call for Papers, Spring 2021 Special Issue on Disease

Supernatural Studies invites submissions for a special issue, inspired by the current crisis, on supernatural engagements with disease, broadly conceived. We welcome essays that explore this theme through explicitly monstrous tropes, e.g. zombies, vampires, parasitism, haunting, and other uncanny embodiments of sickness and contagion. We also invite investigations of narratives that deploy the supernatural to engage existing cultural “maladies” that infectious diseases routinely expose and exacerbate: e.g., economic precarity, healthcare inequities, media mis/disinformation, science skepticism and denial, environmental challenges, and experiences of alienation. We encourage submissions that explore oral, written, and/or visual texts across time, place, and genre. To be as relevant as possible, this special issue will be published in Spring 2021; for guaranteed consideration, submissions should be sent by 31 October 2020 (since Halloween is canceled anyway).

(2016); notes should be indicated by superscript Arabic numerals in text and pasted at the end of the article. International submissions should adhere to the conventions of U.S. English spelling, usage, and punctuation. Manuscripts should contain no identifying information, and each submission will undergo blind peer review by at least two readers. Contributors are responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions and ensuring observance of copyright. Supernatural Studies (ISSN 2325-4866), a peer-reviewed journal, calls for submissions for the Fall/Winter 2013 issue; submissions are due October 1. We welcome articles on any aspect of the representation of the supernatural. Email all submissions to the journal editors: supernaturalstudies@gmail.com. Please note that this call is for general submissions; there are also special issue CFPs available.

The journal focuses on representations of the supernatural in popular culture, including (but not limited to) art, literature, film, and television. We welcome any approach, but request that authors minimize jargon associated with any single-discipline studies.

Articles of between 3,000 and 6,000 words in length (including references) are invited, and should use the MLA referencing system. Book reviews should be between 800 and 2,000 words. Further information, including Submission Guidelines, are available at the journal site: supernaturalstudies.org.

The Supernatural Studies Journal is now accepting proposals for a themed issue on the supernatural in the nineteenth century (due Winter 2014), guest edited by Janine Hatter and Sara Williams.
Articles may examine any aspect of the representation of the supernatural within the context of worldwide literature, arts and material culture in the nineteenth century. We welcome any approach, but request that authors minimize jargon associated with any single-discipline studies.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

folklore & mythology, monstrosity, hybridity, vampires, shapeshifters, goblins, fairies and fairy tales, ghosts and hauntings, demons and angels, possession and/or mind control, death and dying, burial rites, occult, mysticism, spiritualism and séances, spirit photography, religion, superstition, voodoo, culture, philosophy, desire, politics, gender, race, sexuality and class.

Additionally, we are seeking reviews of books that engage with elements of the nineteenth century supernatural (800-1,000 words in length).

For articles: please send a 300-500 word abstract (or complete article, if available) and C.V. by 30 November 2013. All submissions will be acknowledged. Notification of acceptance will be e-mailed by 15 December 2013. If your abstract is accepted, the full article (3,000 - 6,000 words, including references using MLA style) will be 31 March 2014.
